Will New Steel Tariffs Mean Higher HVAC Equipment Prices?

The Trump administration has imposed new tariffs on steel and aluminum, a move that has HVAC system manufacturers worried.

The 25 percent tariffs went into effect in March, and by April, manufacturers started raising equipment prices, a move that will eventually hurt consumers looking to replace heating and cooling systems, notes the industry publication Air Conditioning, Heating and Refrigeration News.

That’s why it’s important to act now on installing a new HVAC system, or – better still – look for a company that uses American-made materials.

At All Seasons Comfort Control, we use only American-made HVAC products from companies like American Standard.

So although we will feel the effects of the tariffs, it will only be around a four percent price increase, as opposed to the 10 to 14 percent increase other HVAC companies are experiencing.

The benefits of buying American

iStock-467881728-[Converted]If you’re like most Americans, you want to buy products made in the USA. Nearly 80 percent of consumers say they’d rather have American-made goods rather than imported products, according to a Consumer Reports survey.

And there are quite a few good reasons why you should buy American – whether it’s a new shirt or a new HVAC system:

  • You’re helping provide jobs, often for people in your own community. You’re also helping ensure jobs stay in America. Once those jobs are outsourced, they rarely come back.
  • It’s better for the environment. Goods made in India, for example, have to travel thousands of miles to get a store in Indiana. That means burning a lot of fuel.
  • You know what you’re getting. With imported goods, there’s often no guarantee of quality, or that your products were made under safe working conditions.

Don’t put a “Band-Aid” on an out-of-date HVAC system

Although the Trump administration says the tariffs will help protect American jobs, there are several economists who think they “will have the reverse impact on employment,”” ACHR News says, “with thousands more jobs lost than created as a result.”

With the new tariffs, manufacturers say they will have to pay more for the raw materials they use to make heating and cooling systems, and will be forced to pass those costs along to consumers.

“When the price of HVACR equipment increases, consumers who are in need of a new system trend toward cut-rate and unqualified individuals to service or replace their equipment,” Stalknecht said. “It also shifts the mindset of consumers to opt for putting Band-Aids on aging systems instead of replacing them with today’s more efficient products.”

It’s never a good idea to take half-measures with your HVAC system, especially with summer on its way. All Seasons Comfort Control can help make sure your system is running efficiently. Or we can work with you to install a new system made from reliable, American-made materials.
