Show Your AC Some Appreciation This Month

There aren’t many holidays this time of year.

July 4 has come and gone, Labor Day is weeks away. And let’s not even think about Halloween or Christmas until cooler weather arrives.

For now, we’ll just have to content ourselves with celebrating Air Conditioning Appreciation Days, which run from July 3 to August 15.

And yes, it’s obviously not a major holiday the way Thanksgiving or Valentine’s Day are. But we think it’s worth observing. We often get so focused on the cost of central air conditioning that we forget the benefits of central air and how it’s changed our lives.

  • We can stay at home during the summer – Before the advent of central air, people wouldn’t want to be at home during a heatwave. You’d either have to escape to a cooler climate if you could afford it, hole up in your basement or a room with a window unit or a fan, or head to the movies.
  • Work is more tolerable – We tend to be more productive when we work inside an air-conditioned space. Before central air became standard in workspaces, businesses would often see productivity slow during the summer as offices and factories became too hot for people to function.
  • AC has helped us become healthier – The cost of central air for a home might seem high but think of the rewards: for one thing, it might help us live longer. For older people, air conditioning in the summer can be a necessity. And the climate-controlled environment in hospitals and other research settings has led to advances in medicine.
  • It’s given us The Avengers OK, maybe there’s no direct line from the invention of central air to Marvel’s billion-dollar franchise. However, before people had air conditioning at home, movie theaters were a prime place to escape from hot weather. Hollywood saw this potential gold mine, and began releasing its biggest movies during the summer.

In other words, there are many reasons to appreciate your AC. And here are a few ways to show that appreciation, whether it’s during “Air Conditioning Appreciation Days” or year round.

1. Check your ducts, change your filters

Check HVAC ducts

Clogged or dirty air filters force your air conditioning system – and your heater – to work harder to make your home more comfortable.

That’s why it’s important to change the filters with every season (or once a month if you have pets or if someone in your home has difficulty breathing). You should also occasionally check your vents and ducts for blockages to keep air flowing freely.

2. Keep cool without AC

Tired of spending the summer worried about the cost of central air conditioning? Give your AC a little break by:

Ceiling fan to help keep cool
  • Using ceiling fans – set to spin counter-clockwise – to circulate cool air
  • Turn off lights in rooms that no one is using
  • Keep your curtains or blinds shut to block out the sun
  • Avoid using appliances that generate heat – clothes driers, ovens – during the day

Finally, we’d suggest showing your air conditioning some love and appreciation by scheduling regular HVAC maintenance. This can not only help you identify serious issues with your system, it will help ensure your AC runs smoothly, helping to lower the cost of central air conditioning.
