How To Control Your Heating Bill And Stay Warm

The Best Settings To Keep You Comfortable This Season

Saving money while staying comfortable is one goal that most of us have in common. If your thermostat is set too high or too low, depending on the season, you’re probably spending quite a bit of money on your electric and/or gas bill. So, what settings should you use to stay comfortable and still keep some cash in your wallet? This quick guide can help throughout the year.

In Warmer Months . . .

Late spring and summer bring hot temperatures outside, which also will heat up your home quickly. The temptation is to turn the thermostat to an extremely cool temperature. However, if you keep it at a temperature that is a bit cooler than the outside temperatures you will find that your home feels comfortable. The recommended setting for this time of year is 78 degrees Fahrenheit while you’re awake and a bit warmer while you are sleeping or away from home.

Baby, It’s Cold Outside . . .

Late fall and winter means that the temperatures outside and inside are cold. Again, the temptation is to turn the heater up to an extremely high temperature in order to stay warm. However, just having your home warmer than the temperature outside will provide enough warmth. The recommended setting during the cold months is to keep the thermostat set at 68 degrees Fahrenheit while you are awake and a bit cooler while you are asleep or away.

Making the Change

The recommended thermostat settings may not be what you are used to and may mean making a big change in your home. For most of us, this is true. Don’t be discouraged, though. As you are making the change, remember that you will have more change in your pocket at the end of the month by using the recommended settings.  In fact, using the recommended settings can save you up to 15% on your energy bills each month!
